Gluten Free Alcohol: Our Tips & Tricks

The festive season is well and truly upon us, and we want to make sure we can eat, drink and be merry without worry. We’ve raided the drinks cabinet to work out which tipples are safe and which are better to avoid – grown-ups only!


 

Which alcoholic drinks are compatible with a gluten free diet?

Wine, liqueurs, cider, port, and sherry are all free from gluten – so if you are planning to enjoy a glass of festive bubbly on the big day, go ahead!

According to Coeliac UK, when spirits are distilled, all traces of gluten are removed, even when they are made with ingredients which contain it. That means that, in their view, spirits like malt whiskey are still safe for coeliacs and those with gluten sensitivities to drink.

Which alcoholic drinks should you avoid if you follow a gluten free diet?

Undistilled drinks made with wheat, barley or rye including beer, ale, stout and lager are not suitable for coeliacs or those with gluten sensitivities.

Some beers, ales and lagers are specifically manufactured without gluten – though it is advisable to proceed with caution. If in doubt, always ask or read the label carefully, or why not check the Coeliac UK Food and Drink Directory for a list of approved gluten free tipples?
